Over the past 20 years, female participation in sports has continued to decline in Canada. An increasing number of girls stop playing sports as they reach adulthood, with only 16% of adult women reporting sport participation.*
The hurdles that females face, starting most often in adolescence, bring a legacy of continued decline in female sport participation. The most reported hurdles* to participation in sports among Canadian women include:
As women balance multiple roles as partners, mothers, sisters, daughters, caregivers, community and business leaders, volunteers and more, their interest in sport sometimes fades. Girls are often discouraged from participating when they feel they lack competence or fundamental skills in sport, or when they do not find value in the sport.
Increased support is imperative in getting girls to both start and continue to play. Looking to role models, such as female athletes and other females in the industry such as family members who play, or female coaches, can help demonstrate to girls that success in sports is attainable, and can provide girls the confidence and determination they need as they seek to overcome these hurdles.
In 2022 Hoops For Her partnered with the Superfan Nav Bhatia Foundation to provide an elevated league experience for our ballers. Since then we have been able to provide custom jerseys, an All-star game and an end of the year Awards Gala. Having Nav and team on board has been inspiring for all of our players.
